3. Bharat Prasad | West Champaran
Retired School Principal
Bharat Prasad, a devoted teacher, embarked on his journey at this school three decades ago, driven by a passion to bring about change. Through the years, he witnessed the community evolve, facing challenges such as the pervasive influence of mafia and crime. Determined to make a difference, Bharat fearlessly confronted these issues, spreading awareness among his students and the community at large.
A general view of life around Gandak river in Champaran today. Around 20 years ago, life was not easy here. Mafia and dacoits regularly abducted children and women from the streets. They used to throw dead bodies in the same river. Literacy was a bane here.
Bharat Prasad, now a retired teacher reminisces walking in his school corridor.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, he rose to the occasion, ensuring the safety of his students and going above and beyond to assist Nepali refugees, sheltering them within the school premises. He also went door-to-door to spread awareness among people and organised street plays. Bharat's unwavering commitment and selflessness inspired others to join his cause.
People gather to watch a street play on Covid-19 and MHM awareness conducted by 'Guruji', as they lovingly call him and performed by his new students of the school.
His unwavering commitment, resilience, and impact on the lives of generations make Bharat not only a revered teacher but a true catalyst for change and progress in his community. Today, he resides alone, far from his biological family, for he considers this place his true home. His students, now teachers themselves, have carried his teachings forward, creating an enduring legacy. As he reflects upon his life's work, his heart is filled with a mix of emotions—pride, gratitude, and a sense of purpose fulfilled.
